Most people think of parasites as a problem for faraway places, but they're closer to home than you might expect. A bag of salad, a backyard garden, or a swim in the lake can all open the door. This guide covers the parasites most common in the U.S., the six herbs found in nearly every cleanse, and how three of our best-selling cleanses compare.

Parasites are more a part of our everyday life than most of us realize, and so are the simple habits that keep them out. Take hookworms, for instance: these tiny worms can live in warm, damp soil and slip in through bare feet. So when your grandmother hollered "Put some shoes on!" every summer, she had a good reason.

That other living thing is called the host. In this case, the host is you.

The parasites that affect people fall into three main groups:

            Single-celled parasites.

These are far too small to see without a microscope. Once inside the body, they can multiply, so even a few can turn into a lot. Cyclospora and Giardia belong here.

Many are big enough to see as adults. Pinworms, tapeworms, and hookworms are all in this group.

These live on the skin or hair instead of inside the body. Think lice, ticks, fleas, and mites.

Signs You Might Have a Parasite

Parasites most often show up as gut trouble that lingers, such as diarrhea that keeps coming back, gas and bloating, cramps, nausea, or a poor appetite. Some can also bring tiredness, weight loss without trying, itching, or low iron.

Each of these parasites can cause its own set of signs. Keep in mind that having one or more of these signs does not mean you have a parasite. The list below shows what each parasite tends to cause when it is present.

            Giardia:

Diarrhea, gas, cramps, nausea, and greasy stools that float. Symptoms can last for weeks.

            Pinworm:

Itching around the bottom that is worse at night, and restless sleep. Many people have no signs at all.

            Toxoplasma:

Most people feel nothing. Some feel achy and flu-like, or notice swollen glands.

            Tapeworm:

Often mild or no signs. Some people have belly pain, a poor appetite, weight loss, or an upset stomach.

            Hookworm:

An itchy rash where it entered the skin. Bad cases can cause belly pain, diarrhea, tiredness, and low iron.

Many of these signs overlap from one parasite to the next, and some people have no symptoms at all. That is why some parasites go unnoticed for so long.

Most parasites enter the body in one of two ways: through your mouth or through your skin. Here are the six most common ways in.

            Water.

Swallowing water while swimming in a pool, lake, or river is one of the main ways people pick up Giardia. Untreated well water and water abroad can carry parasites too.

Fruits and vegetables can pick up parasites from the water used to grow or wash them. That's exactly what happened with this summer's lettuce.

Raw or undercooked beef and pork can carry tapeworms. Undercooked pork, lamb, venison, and shellfish can carry Toxoplasma.

Long before anyone could buy a cleanse in a box, people turned to plants. Bitter herbs, seeds, and spices have been part of cleansing traditions in Africa, India, the Americas, and right here in the South for generations. Here are six that show up again and again.

Black walnut trees are native to the eastern United States, Georgia included. Holistically, the green outer hull is picked before it ripens and used for various health goals and concerns. The hull is especially high in tannins, the same compounds that give strong tea its dry, puckering feel. Tannins bind to proteins and tighten tissue, which is why they have long been used in traditional remedies.

Wormwood is a silvery-green herb best known for its intensely bitter taste. Behind the taste is a mix of natural compounds, and some of them have caught researchers' attention. In lab tests, compounds from wormwood's oil slowed worm larvae and kept worm eggs from developing.

Pumpkin seeds have one of the more interesting stories. In a community study in China, paired with areca nut, it cleared tapeworms in about 89% of confirmed cases. Pumpkin seeds alone worked too, just a little more slowly. An amino acid called cucurbitine is believed to be one of the active parts.

Oregano oil draws its strength from two compounds, carvacrol and thymol. In a small study of 14 adults with gut parasites, 600 mg of oregano oil daily for six weeks cleared certain parasites in several people. It was a small study with no comparison group, but it's one of the few studies done in people.

Para-Cleanse is a 10-day program that comes in pre-sorted packets, so there's no counting capsules. Each packet holds six capsules, and you take one packet with breakfast and one with dinner. Inside, you'll find black walnut hull, paw paw, a pumpkin seed blend, and a wormwood blend. The pumpkin blend includes marshmallow and slippery elm to soothe, plus cascara, a traditional herb for keeping things moving. The wormwood blend adds sweet wormwood, clove, garlic, ginger, and turmeric.

ParaGuard offers the most flexibility. It comes as liquid drops, capsules, or softgels, which makes it a good choice if you have trouble swallowing pills. The formula includes wormwood, green black walnut hull, clove, pumpkin seed, garlic, and oregano oil, along with fennel and peppermint. The label offers two options: a milder 10-day option and a more intensive 30-day option.

What is a binder for a parasite cleanse?

A binder is a supplement that grabs onto substances in your gut so they leave your body with your stool. The idea is that a binder can catch what is stirred up during a cleanse. The four most popular binders are bentonite clay, activated charcoal, psyllium husk, and chlorella, a green algae. We carry all four at Herbal Planet. One honest note: no studies have tested binders in parasite cleanses specifically, so this is a tradition people choose, not a proven step.

Do I need a binder with a parasite cleanse?

No. None of the three cleanses on our shelves call for one. Some people like adding a binder because it helps them feel more regular during the cleanse. If you tend toward constipation, psyllium is the gentlest place to start, since it's a fiber. Charcoal and clay can actually make constipation worse.

Should I take my binder with my cleanse or apart from it?

Apart. This is the tip most people miss. Binders don't pick and choose. Activated charcoal, for example, binds many medicines and can grab vitamins and minerals too, which means it could grab your herbs as well. A good rule of thumb is to keep binders at least two hours away from your cleanse, your medications, and your other supplements. For example, if you take your cleanse with breakfast and dinner, take your binder mid-afternoon.

How often should you do a parasite cleanse?

Para-Cleanse suggests waiting 10 days before starting another round, and ParaGuard offers 10-day and 30-day options. Many herbal traditions treat cleansing as a seasonal reset, like spring or fall, rather than a year-round habit. That's a smart approach, since herbs like wormwood are meant for short-term use.

The AIH formula has probiotics built in. With the other two, many people wait until the cleanse is finished. Then they add probiotic foods like yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut, or a probiotic supplement, to help rebuild the good bacteria in their gut.

Parasites are more common than most of us realize, but knowing how they enter the body is the first step to keeping them out. If you decide a cleanse is right for you, look for a formula built around time-tested herbs like black walnut, wormwood, clove, pumpkin seed, garlic, and oregano oil. Well-built blends also include gentle herbs to soothe the gut along the way. Para-Cleanse, ParaGuard, and the AIH formula each bring these herbs together in their own way, so the right choice comes down to your routine and the form you prefer.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals in the human body, yet many people are unaware of just how essential it is to their everyday health. In fact, magnesium plays a role in more than 300 enzyme systems, helping regulate everything from muscle and nerve function to energy production, blood pressure, bone health, and normal heart rhythm.

With there being so many magnesium supplements available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. You may have seen magnesium glycinate recommended for sleep, magnesium citrate for digestion, or magnesium L-threonate for brain health. Here is your beginner's guide to understanding the most popular and common types of magnesium.

Although magnesium is an essential nutrient, not every form of magnesium has been proven to deliver a unique health benefit. Some forms are better absorbed by the body, others are commonly used for specific digestive concerns, and several are being studied for possible benefits involving sleep, memory, and cardiovascular health. Understanding these differences can help you make more informed decisions about magnesium supplementation.

What Is Magnesium Glycinate Good For?

Magnesium glycinate provides magnesium that contributes to normal muscle and nerve function, energy production, and overall mineral balance. It is particularly well known for its potential role in supporting sleep quality.

Although magnesium is necessary for proper nervous system function, research is still determining whether magnesium glycinate offers sleep benefits beyond those associated with correcting insufficient magnesium intake.

When Is The Best Time To Take Magnesium Glycinate?

Evening, with dinner or before bedtime.

People interested in its potential sleep-related benefits often choose to take magnesium glycinate in the evening. However, researchers have not established a specific time of day that makes magnesium glycinate more effective.

For general supplementation, consistency and tolerability are more important than the exact hour it is taken.

           2. Magnesium Citrate:

Magnesium citrate is created by combining magnesium with citric acid. It is one of the more commonly available forms of magnesium supplements and is generally absorbed more efficiently than some other forms, particularly magnesium oxide.

One of its most recognized uses is the short-term relief of occasional constipation.

What Is Magnesium Citrate Good For?

Magnesium citrate is commonly used to supplement magnesium intake and support normal muscle, nerve, and metabolic function.

It also has an established medical use as an osmotic laxative. When taken in an appropriate laxative preparation and dose, magnesium citrate draws water into the intestines, helping soften stool and encourage bowel movements.

When Is The Best Time To Take Magnesium Citrate?

           Morning or daytime.

When magnesium citrate is taken as a laxative, choosing a time when restroom access is convenient is generally practical. For routine magnesium supplementation, it may be taken with a meal at whatever time best fits your schedule.

           3. Magnesium Malate: Energy and Muscle Function

Magnesium malate combines magnesium with malic acid, a naturally occurring substance involved in the body's cellular energy processes. Because of this connection, magnesium malate is frequently marketed for energy production, fatigue, and muscle discomfort.

However, it is important to distinguish magnesium's established role in normal energy metabolism from claims that magnesium malate specifically improves energy levels.

What Is Magnesium Malate Good For?

Magnesium itself contributes to the body's ability to produce and use energy. It also supports normal muscle contractions, nerve signaling, and numerous cellular functions.

Magnesium malate is commonly promoted for fatigue, muscle soreness, and conditions associated with chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia.

When Is The Best Time To Take Magnesium Malate?

           Morning, preferably with breakfast.

Because magnesium malate is frequently associated with energy support, many people prefer taking it earlier in the day. However, there is no strong scientific evidence showing that taking magnesium malate in the morning provides an energy boost or that taking it in the evening interferes with sleep.

           4. Magnesium L-Threonate: Memory and Brain Health

Magnesium L-threonate is one of the more recently studied magnesium compounds, attracting attention for its possible effects on cognitive function.

Unlike forms primarily marketed for digestion or general mineral supplementation, magnesium L-threonate has been investigated for its potential influence on brain magnesium levels, memory, attention, and sleep. This has made it increasingly popular among individuals interested in cognitive wellness.

Magnesium taurate combines magnesium with taurine, a compound that participates in several physiological processes, including those associated with cardiovascular function. Because both magnesium and taurine have been studied in relation to cardiovascular health, magnesium taurate is often marketed for supporting healthy blood pressure and normal heart function.

           6. Magnesium Oxide: Heartburn and Occasional Constipation

Magnesium oxide is one of the most widely available and frequently used forms of magnesium.

It contains a relatively high percentage of elemental magnesium by weight.

However, magnesium oxide is generally less efficiently absorbed than more soluble forms such as magnesium citrate and magnesium chloride. Despite its lower relative bioavailability, magnesium oxide has several established uses.

What Is Magnesium Oxide Good For?

Magnesium oxide is commonly used as an antacid to relieve occasional heartburn and acid indigestion.

It is also used as a short-term laxative for occasional constipation.

Although magnesium oxide can contribute to magnesium intake, its comparatively lower absorption means that a high elemental magnesium amount on the label does not necessarily translate into greater magnesium absorption.

For occasional heartburn, magnesium oxide should be taken according to the antacid product's directions. When used as a laxative, daytime may be more convenient. It is suggested that if you would like to use the bathroom first thing in the morning, take it an hour before bed.

Magnesium chloride is a water-soluble magnesium compound commonly used in dietary supplements and certain medical preparations. It is often selected for general magnesium supplementation because of its comparatively good absorption.

There is no established scientific advantage to taking magnesium chloride at a particular time of day. For most people using an oral supplement, taking it consistently with a meal is a practical approach.

Magnesium has become a popular ingredient in supplements marketed for sleep and relaxation, particularly magnesium glycinate and magnesium L-threonate.

But does taking magnesium before bed actually improve sleep? The answer is more complicated than many supplement advertisements suggest. Magnesium contributes to normal nervous system function, but this does not necessarily mean taking a magnesium supplement will produce a sedative effect.

Although some participants in individual studies reported improvements in sleep-related outcomes, the available research did not establish sufficient evidence to routinely recommend oral magnesium as a treatment for insomnia.

For individuals interested in sleep support, magnesium glycinate may be a reasonable supplement to discuss with a healthcare professional, particularly when magnesium intake is inadequate. However, it should not replace appropriate medical care for persistent insomnia or other sleep disorders.

Magnesium is naturally found in numerous foods, including pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach, legumes, whole grains, and some dairy products. For many people, eating a balanced diet rich in magnesium-containing foods can make a meaningful contribution toward meeting daily magnesium requirements.

With so many different magnesium supplements available, it's easy to assume that each form serves a completely different purpose. In reality, all seven forms provide magnesium, an essential mineral the body needs for many of the same fundamental functions.

What makes these supplements different is primarily how well they are absorbed, how they affect the digestive system, how they are formulated, and how much clinical evidence supports their specialized uses. Magnesium citrate and chloride are recognized for relatively good absorption, while magnesium oxide has established uses as an antacid and laxative. Magnesium glycinate and L-threonate have attracted growing scientific interest for sleep and cognitive function, although research is still developing.

Meanwhile, magnesium malate and magnesium taurate are frequently marketed for energy, muscle comfort, and cardiovascular health, but more high-quality clinical research is needed to substantiate their form-specific claims.

Ultimately, choosing the right magnesium supplement isn't necessarily about finding the most popular or expensive option. It's about understanding your nutritional needs, reading supplement labels carefully, and making informed decisions based on credible scientific evidence.

Soursop has become one of the most talked-about herbs in natural wellness, and soursop bitters are now searched more than 100,000 times a month. If you've wondered what the buzz is about, here's what American herbalists, naturopaths, and nutrition experts have to say.

Its leaf has a long history as a calming evening "bush tea" in Caribbean and South American herbal traditions.

Soursop bitters are a modern, Caribbean-inspired herbal tonic that borrows the old bitters tradition.

           What Is Soursop?

Soursop is the fruit of a small evergreen tree in the custard-apple family. It's native to tropical America, most likely the West Indies, and today it grows throughout the tropics, including Florida.

Picture a spiky green football. The fruit can weigh several pounds, and its skin is covered in soft, curved spines. Inside is a creamy white pulp that smells a bit like pineapple and tastes sweet with a tart edge. Despite the name, ripe soursop isn't very sour.

In one cup of soursop fruit, there is about 7.4 grams of fiber, 45 mg of vitamin C, and 625 mg of potassium. As for taste, it is naturally sweet: a whole fruit carries roughly 70–80 grams of sugar, worth knowing if you're watching your blood sugar.

For many families in the Caribbean, soursop isn't a trend. It's grandmother's medicine. Herbalists across the islands describe growing up with soursop as one of their everyday bush remedies.

The classic use is simple: in Jamaica, a cup of soursop leaf tea before bed is a time-honored way to settle down for a peaceful night. Some even tuck fresh leaves into their bedding.

Soursop contains plant compounds with antioxidant activity observed in laboratory research. Antioxidants are of interest because they help counter oxidative processes, although research has not established that taking soursop bitters produces specific antioxidant-related health benefits in humans.

Bitter herbs have a long history of use in digestive wellness traditions. Their bitter taste may stimulate saliva and certain digestive responses. However, clinical evidence remains limited, and soursop bitters specifically have not been proven to improve digestion.

Alfalfa has been valued for centuries, from 16th-century England to China and the Middle East. Learn where this nutrient-rich green comes from, what’s inside it, why it’s the base of liquid chlorophyll, and how herbalists have traditionally used it. You’ll also find tips for using it wisely.

Alfalfa is a member of the legume family, also known as buffalo grass and Lucerne.

Herbalists use the herb (leaves), the seed, and the sprout.

Its use stretches from 16th-century England to the Americas, China, and the Middle East, where it earned the nickname "father of all herbs."

Traditional herbal references describe alfalfa as a nutritive green,

Alfalfa is not a complete food on its own, and traditional uses are not a substitute for medical care.

The name has a humble origin. It has been traced back to a Persian word,

Traditional herbal references describe alfalfa as one of the most nutrient-dense green plants. Here is what they highlight:

Alfalfa's roots grow deep into mineral-rich soil, which helps explain its high nutrient value. They're so strong that they've reportedly been found poking through the tops of coal miners' tunnels.

Alfalfa's roots grow deep into mineral-rich soil, which helps explain its high nutrient value. They're so strong that they've reportedly been found poking through the tops of coal miners' tunnels.

Start The Year Right With A Total Body Cleanse!

ARE YOU READY FOR A FRESH START THIS YEAR?

The new year is a hopeful time. Filled with dreams and desires for how we can make positive changes in the coming year. Now with many of us working from home, our eating habits have been drastically impacted from the global pandemic and holidays. Not to mention, most of us have limited gym access and the winter months can be unmotivating to say the least when it comes to getting outside. Needless to say we could ALL benefit drastically from starting off 2021 with a total body cleanse!

WHAT IS A TOTAL BODY CLEANSE?

Is it one of those things where I'm going to be in the bathroom all weekend? Am I going to feel worse before I feel better? Will I instantly lose 50 pounds?

These are all common questions and the staff here at Herbal Planet are always happy to tackle them and de-mystify what it means to do a total body cleanse. To start, a cleanse that keeps you in the bathroom would not be considered "total body," but targeting the bowels. When detoxing the full body you

           may

experience slight detox symptoms for a couple days such as headaches or slight irritability but typically these are minor and pass quickly. Last but not least, we're sad to say there is not a "magic cleanse," that will shed 50+ pounds in a week; however, many total body cleanses may produce some weight loss.

A total body cleanse means just that: Total body. Typically these herbal formulas will target multiple areas of the body that are prone to building up toxins. In particular; the gut, liver, lymphatic system and the circulatory system. Here are two of Herbal Planet's favorite total body cleanses!

Dieter’s Cleanse is an essential first step in any weight management plan, for use between programs, or for use by any adult desiring periodic cleansing and detoxifying. Years of improper diet–refined foods, low-fiber foods, and fast foods–can cause an imbalance in the gut and digestive system. This imbalance can limit the body’s ability to fully absorb vital nutrients needed for optimal health.

             Your Preferred Essential Oil(s)

Fill your glass container with 1/4 Cup of your preferred carrier oil. Add up to 24 drops of your preferred essential oil(s). Seal the container and shake to combine. Some important things to note about using essential oils is the ratio of essential oils to your carrier oil. It's wise never to exceed the ratio of 2 drops to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil! Also, when making your own body oils, small batches are always good because there's less risk of them becoming rancid over time.

Before the Ancient Inca civilization, Pau D'Arco bark has been used for its medicinal properties in South America, where it grows naturally. Hospitals in South America use it on cancer patients in order to stop the destructive process of chemotherapy, aiding in pain relief, shrinking tumors and multiplying red blood cells. Research shows Pau D'Arco exhibits anti-fungal, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, cleansing, and immunostimulant actions, which makes it a powerful herb for many different ailments.

The cloudy winter months (when people receive little sun exposure) are the hardest months for the immune system. During these times, people are less likely to have needed levels of vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin. Elderberry D3fense is a unique blend specifically formulated to support the immune system. It contains a healthy dose of vitamin D3, which mounting research indicates strengthens the immune system, along with key ingredients elderberry fruit extract and Echinacea purpurea. Elderberry D3fense also contains willow bark extract, which contains salicin; olive leaf extract, which features oleuropein, the substance in olive wood that helps protect the tree; and royal jelly, a nutrient-dense substance secreted by the honey bee and containing fats, carbohydrates, amino acids and vitamins.
